The work of SFA focuses on four main areas:
- We offer direct support to heritage and traditional artists and emerging ethnic and folk groups (through technical assistance, a professional development institute and Master-Apprentice Fellowships),
- We facilitate cultural diversity and heritage arts education, artist networking, heritage asset-mapping in neighborhoods, cities, workplaces and in partnership with human service agencies,
- We organize, present and offer exhibits, publications, performances, workshops, conduct documentation and training to advance understanding and role of traditional cultural arts in communities of the greater Southwest,
- We produce a large annual regional folklife festival, Tucson Meet Yourself, an iconic event serving more than 120,000 people in the Tucson community since 1974.
